During my internet search about the subject, I found the following:

From the Walter Reeves website: "Skunk - Odor removal

A chemist in Illinois believes he has discovered a way to obliterate one of the most noxious odors known to humans: skunk. Paul Krebaum used concentrated hydrogen peroxide to remove noxious smells from the chemical processes in his laboratory. When a co-worker announced that his cat had had an unpleasant encounter with a skunk, Paul remembered that the chemicals he worked with resembled those that cause skunk odors.

Krebaum went to a local drug store and purchased ingredients. The cat was welcomed back in the house after taking a bath in the solution. Trappers and nuisance wildlife control specialists have found it effective on their clothes.

Here is the recipe: Mix 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide (from the drug store) with 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of liquid soap. Bathe the animal or clothes or shoes with the solution and then rinse with tap water.

Keep this recipe - your dog might bring home a pungent reminder some day soon!"

From the North Carolina State University Website:

"Skunk Odor Removal
Tomato juice does not work to neutralize or deodorize skunk spray. Bathing an animal in tomato juice seems to work because after lengthy exposure to strong odors, the human nose quits smelling the odor (olfactory fatigue). When this happens while bathing a pet in tomato juice, the odor of tomato juice can easily be detected. A person suffering olfactory fatigue to skunk spray will swear that the skunk odor is gone and was neutralized by the tomato juice. Another person arriving at this point will quickly tell you that the skunk smell is still present.

Wash the pet outside so the skunk spray does not contaminate your house. Bathe pets that have been sprayed in a mixture of 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide (from drug store), 1/4 cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and a teaspoon of liquid detergent. (This recipe will wash a small dog the size of a Jack Russell terrier. Make multiple batches for bigger pets.) Make sure the solution soaks through the hair onto the skin. Rinse the animal thoroughly with water after 5 minutes of scrubbing. Repeat if necessary. The hydrogen peroxide mixture must be used immediately after mixing and will not work if it is stored for any length of time. DO NOT STORE IN A CLOSED CONTAINER - it releases oxygen gas so it could break the container. This mixture may bleach the pet's hair. (Paul Krebaum's Recipe from Chemical & Engineering News , October 18, 1993, p. 90). "

Tomato bath. My dad had a dog that was very brave.... but not very smart. He charged skunks on more than one camping trip, and Dad always gave him a tomato bath. But the dog still stunk, so Dad made him sleep in the truck.
If the smell is really serious, you could shave the dog as well.

My parents just had this happen to their dog a few nights ago. They said tomato juice didn't work at all. The found a recipe on the internet that was water, peroxide, baking soda, and something else, and it worked great. So I would say start looking up recipes, and if you see something similar try it out. If I can get a hold of them later I'll right back with the exact recipe. Good Luck.

you can try giving him a bath in tomato juice, and this reduces the smell but doesnt get rid of it altogther. the only thing you can do to totally be rid of it is shave all his hair off. my dog was sprayed by a skunk and we just bathed him in tomato juice several times. we considered shaving him, but he is a golden retriever and that would have looked ridiculous.

If you dont want to put something harsh on the coat, go to the petstore and look for one of two products. Odormute or Skunkbegone I think its called. Not positive on the second one but its something like that. It has a skunk on the label. They do work.

Tomato juice really doesn't work very well. I had a cat get skunked, and I found this recipe really worked. The sooner you use it, the better.

There are special shampoos that veterinary clinics sell...you could also try a product from a store like PetCo...

A clinic in WI has a homemade remedy in their office book I am pretty sure...they are in Hortonville, WI - Heritage Animal Hospital (920) 779-4343. A clinic in your area may have something similar - give them a call and ask!

Good luck - that smell will just about gag you.

When my dog was alive, he used to get sprayed at least once each season. My vet told me to use dial soap for washing and rinsing with powdered massengil douche, mixed with water in a pitcher. It worked for him. Just don't get him wet again for a while, and if it is in your dogs mouth, brush with tomato juice. Good Luck!
