Yes, up to 2mg per pound. Use the children's and make sure it is not benadryl plus pain reliever or anything else. Just straight benadryl.
If he is itching all the time he probably needs to be checked for allergies. Animals can be allergic to their surroundings and their food just like humans. There are special foods for allergy dogs that can help. There are also allergy injections for severe cases. This may be a little expensive to do at first but it would be well worth it. You don't have to listen to them scratch and they don't have to be miserable.

I know several people who have done this but I don't recommend it unless your vet says it's ok. If your dog has an underlying medical condition that you're not aware of, benadryl can cause death and organ failure in the even of overdose.
If he's itchy all the time, it might not necessarily be allergy related. He could have microscopic parasites, sensitive skin, problems with the heat or even a staph infection. (the staph is easily determined by the icky smell that's always there no matter what/how often you wash the dog.)
The best bet is a vet trip to let them do a skin scrape and rule out the need for oral medications. Aside from this, you should try to wash his bedding, get him groomed-or wash him with one of the popular 'sensitive skin' shampoos for dogs. There are several that are made especially for dogs with irritated skin and usually include chamomile and/or oatmeal to soothe it. Try to keep him cool and if he's a furry breed, check into him getting clipped a bit.
Here's the link to the website for some homemade remedies that I've used. Some are successful on every dog and others weren't but they are not expensive and worth a try for anyone.

Call the vet.....
It may be something that benadryl wont help.
And again, what size dog? With people, age shows a lot about size generally. But some dogs will never weigh more than 10 pounds. So call the vet.

Benadryl is dispensed by body weight, age, and general health. This question is really best asked of your vet. A quick phone call and you'll have an answer you can trust.

Check the ingredients on the food you are feeding. Many dogs are allergic to corn. Dogs are carnivorous and need meat product but many cheaper dog foods contain corn as the main ingredient. Do check body weight for the benadryl. My 40 lb gets one pill 25mg. My 65lb can take two.

Sure! We give it to my dog all the time. She is allergic to everything, so we get the gelcap ones. Most dogs are allergic to the pink dye, so go for ones without coloring. The offbrands work just as well and they're cheaper.

NO Asprin or Claritan for you dog!! IT will cause serious problems!
You can, however, administer benedryl at 25mg per 15 pounds of body weight! I administer benedryl for dog grooming and it works wonders!

Yes, but be careful how much you give him. Ask your vet for the correct amount based on his weight. Then ask him about being tested for allergies (the dog, not the vet).
