my pets had fleas last summer. i had to treat all of my pets by bathing them in flea shampoo and then giving them a topical preventative. next, i treated the carpet floors and any other areas they frequent. i sprinkled a flea powder for carpets and then vacuumed it up. finally, i had to spray down the entire yard with an insect spray that hooks up to the waterhose and kept them out of the yard until it was completely dry. now i use frontline plus every month to prevent any reoccurences. this method worked because i haven't seen any fleas this year. but, if you have a heavy infestation maybe you should get professional help.

You are going to need to treat your pets, your carpet/furniture, and yard.
For your pets, I would not use flea soap, flea powder, or flea collars. According to our vet, these have the tendency to burn and irritate your pets skin.
I use PurrScriptions (available at PetSmart) on my cats. I use Zodiac pet on my dog (also available at PetSmart). Unlike Frontline, both products also protect against mosquitoes. Before applying these flea drops, you can bathe your pets in PertPlus (which I was told by the vet that it smothers adult fleas). You might also want to give your pets a CapStar pill. These are available thru your vet or that 1-800 pet meds company. The CapStar is an oral flea treatment that "boost" the flea drops.
Brush your pets using a flea comb also.
For your house, Zodiac pet has a variety of products to treat fleas in the house. They have a powder, a fogger, and a variety of sprays. You can also find these at PetSmart. After you kill the fleas, vacume them up. Then throw the bag away, outside.
As for the yard (where they are probably coming from), you can use VetKem-Siphotrol Plus II Premise Spray, found online at: http://www.bullwrinkle.com/index.html?ShoppingPages/flea-spray.htm~indexmain
If you kill fleas in all three of these areas, you can get rid of these buggers.
Hope this helps!

EEK! All over the house? SOunds like you need to use a flea bomb.
Go to your local pet store and ask them for a flea bomb. Be prepared to know the size of the rooms because each bomb is for a certain area.
Get your cat a flea bath and a flea collar and you'll need to treat your bed linens and such in the wash
Best of luck on this one!

Try revolution for cats.....it not only gets fleas but also heartworms, ear mites, ticks, and intestional parasites. It is worth the money. If the fleas are too bad in your house call your vet....there are some products you can spray in your house that are very effective.
The cheap stuff like hartz are not really good for your animals so I would suggest the vet stuff.

If it is cold enough, they will go away on their own - they don't like cold. But it is prob summer for you, so they are around. Here's how to make it unpleasant for them in your home.
First, get rid of the ones on your cat - comb your cat's coat with a flea comb (found in pet store), dipping it in water in between brushes. Or use advantage medicine, or other flea/tick medicine from vet.
After cat is clean, do all laundy, sweep/vacuum all rooms, vacuum where you sit most often. (they can only live near warmth).

i know how to get rid of fleas *on a cat*... you should get the cat anti-flea ointment and put it on the back of the cat's neck. as for your home, you should probably send the carpets to get cleaned and spray the house for bugs.
