The aggression is a tough one. I would definitely speak to his pediatrician and to the people on his IEP team. Assuming he is in public school, the IEP team may wish to recommend him for some counseling in addition to any therapies he may already be receiving.

As for running off, this is fairly common among kids with Down syndrome. My son's not old enough yet, but I'm sure I'll be revisiting this issue one day. Around the house, I suggest you install alarms on the doors and/or windows. These need to be installed high up on the door and out of his reach. Usually they work by a magnetic connection being broken and sounding an alarm. If he tends to run off when you are out at the store or whatever, they make a variety of devices to help you tell if he has gone too far away from you.... here is one such device

Additionally, check with your local chapter of ARC, DDD or your local police department. If his running away is a severe problem, you can get a special bracelet that has a tracking device.

I've been told by several parents with children who have DS and like to "escape" that they do grow out of this phase...so here's hoping!

Best of luck!

That's a tough one, and there are probably very few people in this forum that can answer it for you. Your child will not respond to discipline the way that another child might, but I don't have to tell you that. Is he in a public school? You might want to talk to his teacher there. I guarantee that he/she has seen the worst of the worst in all degrees of down syndrome and other disabilities and would be happy to find a method of discipline and structure that would work for you. Also, have you seen a therapist that specializes in this kind of thing? If this is not in your budget, speak to someone in your local social services department. This is what they are here for and they can most certainly refer you to a support group or low-cost therapist. I hope this helps!
