My nephew gets bug bites on him every time he visits his mom. (Flea bites) He scratches them until they bleed and now he has horrible scars all over his arms and legs. What can we do to stop him from scratching. And how can we make the mom see that they are not caused by mosquitos. They look nothing like a mosquito bite.

She has a cat in the house. But she thinks because she "supposedly" gives it a bath weekly, it can't possibly have fleas. It has no flea collar. And she won't put one on it.

The visits are court ordered so we can't keep him from going to his mom's house.

He just need to learn to stop scratching. Any ideas?? He is 8 years old.

The first thing I would do is get a court date, this is a health issue that NEEDS to be visited in a court of law. There is nothing you can do to get through to the thick headed mother, just push on to try to be heard by someone who has the ability to change this. You see, parasitic bugs can pass disease... bathing a feline doesn't get rid of these bugs, they are in the house, and they are being spread by way of carpeting, bedding and furnishings. The only way she can get rid of these bugs is to bomb the house and take the cat to the vet, and have it dipped. She will then have to have the cat remain indoors for the rest of it's life. This sounds too difficult for someone with very little brain, so, you have got to contact someone to get this heard. I agree, you cannot take away visitations, but you can ask for supervised visitations in a mutual place, such as a safe house, specifically designed for visitations. Make sure you have pictures and take him to a doctor and have it documented. Put all your ducks in a row, and THEN ask for this!

Good Luck on this long drawn out journey, and if yo uare relentless about all of this you shall not have to worry about his bug bites from there again.

Also there is something you can do until then... by some skin so soft bug repellant, (By AVON) and put it all over him when it is time for the visits... this will stop the biting until you can be heard!

A guy before me said something about going to court, and he's right on. My ex husband had a flea problem at his house and my son was covered with bites. He was scratching at school, bleeding all over the place and being sent to the nurse's office. I bi*tched all I could and had to tell the school there was nothing I could do. They, the school, contacted child protective services, who came in and did the home investigations, etc. It really was the only way to get it across to my ex that something had to be done. He had a humongous Rottweiler at the time...who was filthy and covered with fleas.
If these visits are court ordered and she won't listen to anything....you're only choice is to contact somebody with authority. Good luck.

I would also show her the bites/scars next time you are there and suggest to her some frontline for cats if she is opposed to collars. She will also need to bomb her house, fleas are horrible to get rid of.

To stop the scratching if the hydrocortizone doesn't work trying putting a little drop of liquid dial soap and rub in until gone. It will usually stop the itching and dry up the sore.

Good luck

He may actually have an allergy to the flea bites themselves. Try showing his mother a picture of a flea bite and a mosquito bite online to specify the differences..
You can use a cream designed to counteract the bug itch..it may be hard for him to control himself.
Request that she use something like Frontline on the cat.

They itch and he's 8. I think you will have a job to stop him scratching. A local antihistamine cream might help and calamine lotion is what one uses for chicken pox spots.

If the visits are court ordered, you have a right to protect the child from harm and you should inform the court that you cannot send a child on a visit which you know to be harmful to him.

Buy him round bandaids.

Use some bug bite relief like Bactine, and place those little round bandages over the sores until they heal up.

If you use Neosporin, the healing will be dramatically faster.

The bandages are very inexpensive at Walmart.

A typical Raid bug bomb in the house will cure the flea problem.

Could be a common infestation of 'bedbugs'? Maybe check the term, Google the solutions, it's an eleborate effort to overcome but if it itches, ya gotta find the source before you can begin to achieve the solution.

Tell the court and take pictures. Then give the kid some bug spray to keep him off of him while he is there.

mix 2 bottle's cup of vinegar with 2litre of water, rinse or wash it on those bites... it should be able to stop the itchiness. Apply some lotion or cream after that.

Hope it helps.. good luck.

You can give him benadryl orally, but it will make him groggy. What about spray benedry or Hydrocortisone cream.

He is old enough that he should be able to take care of this himself.
