The are programmed to give the answer "to serve the public" or "to give back to the community" or another pre-selected answer. In all the years Cops have been on the air I have seen only two cops tell the absolute truth: "I did it for the POWER!" That is the ONLY right answer to that question; any other answer is pure indoctrination and the result of brainwashing. That's a LOT of cops who have lied to my face and who think I'm stupid enough to believe them just because they're cops. I want the two cops who told the truth to save me from a fiery car crash because they know who they are as people. They do it for the power, period. Does anyone agree with me?

Actually no I dont agree with you. I didnt do it for the power and I know a lot of officers that did not do it for the power. Are you the "amazing Karnac that you can read everyones mind?" You want to know who really does their job for the power?... CEO's and they love the power they have and the perks that come along with the job.

There was a psychological study done once, don't ask me which school because I can't remember, I will have to ask Ma, (she's a shrink, and Dad's a truck driver, boy...didn't see that divorce coming). 1000 cops from all different cities, states, departments, etc. etc., were given the MMPI2 (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, Version 2). Then they did the same thing with 1000 convicted felons, murderers, rapists, arsonists, etc. etc. Then the results were compared. Guess what. You almost could not tell the tests apart from one another. They showed that the majority of all tested showed low self esteem, depression, poor self image, feelings of powerlessness. Both groups found ways to lash out and take their feelings of weakness out on others, they just found different sides of the iron bars to do it from. Now, I am not sayhing that all cops are this way. I have a lot of cops in my family. Grandpa, Uncle Tom, Uncle Roy, Uncle Don were all good cops, were more the friendly charming type, and did their jobs well and never had to be an asshole about it. My cousins, on the other hand, seem to belong to the new breed that think that being an asshole is job #1.

No, I couldn't disagree more whole-heartedly. You're so far off base it's just sad. I agree that there are a lot of asshole cops who do do it for the power, but if you think that describes all, or even the majority of the profession, I pity you for your extreme cynicism. I know a lot of great people, who are cops because they want to make a difference. I also know some who are controlling jerks, but THEY are the minority. And just what, pray tell, do you do for a profession that serves the public in such a manner that permits you to look down your nose at people who would sacrifice everything for a perfect stranger? I got news for you, nothing gives you that right. Nothing. Cops aren't perfect, but neither is anyone else.

I have known very well 100's of officers if not 1000's and trained with 100's. Most do it to be of service to the public, or try and give back to a community and things like that. Only a few do it for power trips.

"Cops" TV show has little real life in it, officers are chosen and are never the first on a scene. Many things are staged and even re-filmed to show it they way they want it to look.

They lie when you ask that question? WOW!! So um, what..you're a mind reader? That's so truly AMAZING!
Is that, like, a super power or something?
You know, you could make an awful lot of money with that talent.
So, there you are asking them why they became a police officer, and the whole time they're telling you, you're REALLY reading their minds and knowing their deep evil secret for why they REALLY became cops.
I'm impressed.
Really.
I have never ever met a real mind reader.
I mean, technically, we haven't met.
But, well, you know what I mean.
Good luck in all your psychic endeavors!

No, I disagree. I have a twisted view on the world but...

No. Some people really don't care about power.

Get over it.

I agree, its like if you ask someone why they started smoking cigarettes......any answer but ' I did it to look cool ' is a lie. No one smokes their first cig and says " wow that was great ".
