The world may never know how many licks it truly takes to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop. I'd venture 2 1/2 (the first two licks taste good and by half of the third lick, you bite into it to get to the gooey center).

I recall an animated commecial from the 70's that said it was...ah one...ah two...ah three...crunch..three licks to get to the centre of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop.

There was actually a scientific experiment on this! At Purdue University, students got together and built a machine which simulated the human tongue, and set it to find out how many licks it took. I'm not sure if they ever published their results.
