I'm worried I'll hate it. In junior high we did marchign for homecoming game but that was it. It's also required to do marching band too. I'm excited but i really don't know what it will be like. I need some answers on this please people.

Omg Girl. You sound just like me. I was a freshman, and I play Trumpet as well. Its hard at first. We have two weeks of band camp, so I'll just tell ya what we do..the first week is usually memorizing music. The second week Its drill drill drill.. They give you charts, and you read where you are on the chart, and then you take so many counts to go to the next chart.. and you keep doing that over and over, and then you usually play the music along with the charts, like for example measure 40-43 could be your marching to the 50 yard line, etc.. It will all come to you eventually! Its a lot of hard work, but its fun in the end! (Just remember.. keep ur horn up, and if all else fails, ask the upper classmen...)

Perhaps this will sound super nerdy, but I went to marching band camp when I was in high school and it was so much fun!

There was lots of marching around in big groups to make sure you didn't run into each other. Also practicing the commands to turn left and right and go forward, etc.. This was as much practice for the drum majors as for the band members.

We also spent lots of time just practicing the music over and over. Even if you can't memorize it all, it is nice to know it pretty well so that you don't have to think about that while you should be thinking about where you should be going.

Do you go somewhere for the camp? Is the camp done at school? You will be drilled to learn the correct technique for the show's you will be doing and with the first game within 5 days depending on the Director I would assume it will be intense. If you like band and the whole atmosphere of band geeks then you will be fine. If you go somewhere to stay at a camp, don't give up anything to be accepted. YOU still have 4 years of high school in front of you.

Part of your time will be spent working on the music and memorizing it and the other part will be spent working on the marching. They'll probably start you out learning the commands and teach you how to read the drills. It might be confusing at first, but it's really not that hard and it's the upperclassmen's job to help you out if you have any questions. I loved marching band camp because I got to spend a lot of time with my friends and it was an easy way to meet new people. Have fun!

HELLO FELLOW BAND GEEK!

I am in the Marching Band at my school. I absolutely love it. You shouldn't be nervous.

I can give you some advice to help your experience go a little smoother though.

They normally send out the music a couple weeks in advance for the marchers to memorize. MEMORIZE IT! The directors and everybody else will think it is a waste of time to be standing around trying to memorize the music, when you should be on the field memorizing your sets. I can guarantee that some of your band members will neglect their music before camp. Since you will have yours memorized already, you could help them out.

When I went to band camp, it was hard work, but it was a lot of fun. Just make sure you wear sunscreen. lol.

Good luck!

Well, I'm going to be at band camp for the first time next week too, except I have to learn how to play all the percussion instruments by our first game, which is also the 25th. Good luck!

my boy starts camp 2morrow and 4 ,2 weeks he is practicing .. its hard work but in the end it's worth it . he plays the big base drum and he is exhausted after every practice , but he never gives up . band members get called names , but , I'd like to see some of theses jock (offs) go out there and practice like the band does . they would NEVER be able to do it . he has gone on many trips with the band and a lot of other student are jealous of the and call them geeks , synonym for Great Excellent Exciting Kid

lets put it this way. if it's a good band, then it will probably make you lose ten pounds, hurt all over, and be pretty dang good by the end of the week. i just finished with my camp. believe me. i would know. it may seem like pain and suffering, but that's the worst it will be all year...
