pound, humane society, or animal league? you may have to pay a very small fee for basic stuff, but that's it.
classifieds sometimes have listings for free animals too, especailly if a dog just had puppies and the owners don't want them all.

you should check in the newspaper classifieds or try your local animal shelter, humane society, or rescue group. these places have so many animals waiting for someone to love them and give them a good home. never buy them from a pet store (except petsmart) because they get those dogs from puppy mills that mistreat the animals...they're all about money. petsmart also helps animal shelters adopt out homeless pets. i personally wouldn't buy from a private seller either because i feel they are just trying to make a quick dollar off of these animals.

Check out the "classified ads" in your local paper in the "Pets " section as well as the "Free" section. You can often also adopt a pet from a local humane society or spca, but they aren't free as various spay/neuter and vaccination fees are built in to getting the animal.

If you go to a rescue or a shelter the adoption fee will cover the spay/neuter and shots, deworm and a vet check. We even microchip and you get a month of insurance.

Petfinder.com lists dogs in your area for adoption. Also check your local SPCA and animal shelters. There are lots and lots of doggies who need a loving home where they will be cared for.
