I just don't get it. I don't understand why parents allow their kids to date at such a young age. What happend to not allowing a child to date until they are 16. I wasn't allowed to date until I was 16. And I will not allow my kids to date or do group outings until they are 16. Or do anything by them selves until they are 16 for that matter. I don't care what it is. Parents need to be real strict in this day & age. Remember we are their parents not their friends.

Not this parent, 16 is a reasonable age to date in my eyes

I also wasn't able to date until I was 16 - and then only double dates. Parents allow their children to grow up to fast and play adult these days - and they pay for the action by having to raise grandchildren.

btw....if a 10 - 14 year old can do anything beyond a parents back away from home, and the parent suspects that they are - that parent is doing something wrong.

My daughter wasn't aloud to go on a real "date" until she was 17. She went on group dates to the movies and stuff but I knew her friends and their parents. She had a strict curfew as did her friends. My oldest son was the same way and my youngest son really didn't care about it, as long as got to go hang out.

I think parents these days are too lazy to keep up with their kids and be involved. It's easier for them to just give in and in turn pretty much give up on their kids. It's a shame.

wow no offense this is my own personel opinion but i think you are completly wrong.

My parents brought me and my two sisters up having freedom but not a ton.

They knew that it was important to let your children live not trap them down because your afraid they'll do bad things. I agree you do have to be strict but have boundaries not just trap the child until shes 16...think about the child for a second.

whats so wrong about having a boyfriend when your a preteen?
My parents let me have a boyfriend in 6th grade...i wasnt aloud to go on dates with him but we could go on group dates with all my friends.
If u protect your children to much they will rebel and date behind your back, do drugs, leave the house at midnight...the list goes on.

It is important to be both a friend and a parent to your child...but make sure they no the limit.

My mom was my best friend growing up i told her everything...and in return both my parents trusted me. So i had no reason to rebel against them.

I totally disagree with you. My parents were extremely strict on me. I wasn't allowed to date, wasn't allowed to go to anyone's house if there were any boys there under the age of 30, wasn't allowed to hang out at the mall, etc. etc. etc. So I just snuck around behing their backs and did exactly what I wanted to, and became a mother at the age of 17.
I have a 14 year old daughter and I am much more lenient on her. She is not allowed to car date, but that is just because I'm afraid of teen drivers. Not because I don't trust her. I talk to her openly about all topics, I respect her and I demand respect. I don't use scare tactics and fear to try to control her.
All you can do is try to teach them right from wrong and hope that they are listening. Once they are out of your sight, wether they are at school or on a date, then it is up to them to choose how to behave. I know of several kids who have had sex at school, in the bathrooms, in classrooms, in closets. If they are determined to do something, you can't stop them. Like I said, all you can do is teach them what they should do. I'm not saying there shouldn't be consequences for wrong actions, but you aren't going to prevent things from happening if they really want to do them.

You`re looking at it the wrong way. I`m not American, I`m Portuguese and I feel Europeans are much more lenient on this issue. I don`t have kids but, when I do, I will allow them to go out with their friends and date. Trust me, they will do it anyway and you won`t even find out!!!
I went out with my friends since the age of 12 (I think) and I never did anything wrong...

First, define date. Second, would you rather the children do it behind their parents' backs? And third, do you think that they won't find a way to do it behind their parents' backs?

I began dating when I was 15. I had boyfriends long before that, but my "real" first date was at 15.

To be a good parent, you must supervise your children rather than give them strict rules to follow that you cannot possibly enforce.

10 I agree is really early for that. 15, um...

Dear, I am of grand parent age now, though my daughter has not had any children as of yet. For which I am thankful.

No group outings until they are 16? You are going to get nuked on that one.

A line needs to be drawn, I agree. You are way on the wrong side of it. You need to communicate, and trust your kids better. Or, trust me, you are going to get smacked between the eyes with something you did not freaking expect.

I guess some parents just think that if they try to keep their kids back they'll do it behind their backs anyway. But I totally agree... I think they should let us wait till we're 16. I'm 16 now but that doesn't matter.. I'll sure make my kids wait!.. or try to. lol. I think group outings are okay though.. as long as you know their friends.

I think the most important thing is to know your child and your child's friends. Just not allowing them to date or do group outings isn't enough. You have to be involved in your children's lives to teach them why you have the rules you do and how that effects them.
