You determine your own driving record. But I know what you mean here....

Insurance companies enter info in the computer about you...name, dob, dl#, social.... and it gets returned to us immediately revealing any tickets and accidents you may have. All your violations show up, but your rates are based on the recent ones, like in the last 3 to 5 years.

So when calling around for quotes, it pays to be honest, as we are going to find out the truth sooner or later!

The state licenses insurance companies to sell within their state. They allow those companies access to the DMV and police records.

They all use a common database compiled by a third-party...Insurance Institute plus they have access to your violations, points, etc. from the state.

They run a DMV lookup on you based on your name, date of birth, social security number, and driver's license number.

They also do a central insurance file lookup on you for additional claims or accident reports.

It's based on your driving record, oddly enough. They don't determine it, you do!
