Having been through my fair share of sunburns, here's my strategy.

1) Vinegar on a cotton-ball immediately after discovering the burn. Ever noticed how the skin feels hot? Well, it's still burning. The vinegar helps pull the heat out of the skin and keeps it from getting any worse.

2) Aloe Vera applied regularly (at least 2-3 times per day) until the burn is gone. This helps reduce the tenderness and promotes quick healing. Straight from the plant is best, or a 100% aloe gel. Putting it in the fridge feels good on the burn, but doesn't seem to affect how well it actually works. Lotions with aloe in them will work, but not as well.

3) When you start peeling, use lots of lotion. The skin peels because it has been dried out. Use lotion to add some moisture to your skin. It may not eliminate the peeling, but it will help it go away sooner.

I put aloe vera GEL in the fridge... let it get nice and cool and apply to the sun burned skin. Have the kids sit in front of a fan while the cool gel is on. This should relieve the pain. Maybe a little children't Tylenol would help, too. Good Luck!

I make a paste with quick oats, vinegar and strong brewed tea. Smooth it on wait a few minutes, rinse in a cool shower (no soap it'll aggravate the burn) air dry (in front of a fan feels good) and apply a lotion with aloe vera. Then give ibuprofen right before bed.

The quick oats are very moisurizing and help prevent peeling

If this is to messy for you:
mustard
vinegar applied with a wash cloth
a bath with strong brewed tea
ibuprofen
add quick oats to bath water or you can buy aveeno

Another vote for aloe vera. If you don't have a plant, you could get aloe vera gel in a bottle at the pharmacy... it's also good for kitchen burns. It really does help with healing, and soothes the pain.

Gold Bond medicated lotion and some olive oil to prevent peeling. I have one child that burns no matter what is used. The only sunscreen that works on her is the Bullfrog All Day gel. It has an SPF of 37.

Pick a aloe vera gel that has lidocaine in it. They can be found at your local wal-mart.. the brand I use is Ocean Potion. The gel is blue. It works wonders. And helps keep the skin moist.

Aloe Vera is one of the best. My kids swear by the Solicaine (sp?) spray. They say it feels cool and refreshing and does not sting.
