I have a 3 month old Chihuahua mix female puppy. She does not like being held. When you try to pick her up she thinks you're playing and starts nipping. Is this just her age or will she probably never like being held if that's her current personality?

I got her from an animal rescue shelter. Her mom had her while there. She was the last to be taken from mom.

Have you had her all her life or did you get her?Because if you got her then she could have gotten picked up and abused.

Being held in someone's arms is not a natural experience for dogs. They naturally freak out a little bit, which is the natural reaction to being 'caught'. Do what you can to enforce the dog's submission, and train her to stop yipping at people. Good training, enforcement of the rules, and constant exposure to people will calm this down. 3 months is still a little young, but you should sign up for a doggy training class. Find a class that focuses on you and your dog both. Some classes seem to forget that parents need as much training as doggies do.

Don't let your dog get the better of you in the pack mentality... you are the Alpha, they are Omega, the lowest.

Nipping is normal for a puppy because they're teething. Everytime she does that give her an appropriate chew toy or rawhide chewy - it teaches them what they can chew on. Also, in puppy training we learned that we should let out a yelp when the puppy nips us to let it know that this hurts! They get the message after awhile...

You are going to have to make her be held. She is young and probably a puppy mill dog so its going to be difficult. She should eventually get used to being held.

Are you sure she doesn't have a health issues that it may hurt when you pick her up??

It might be her age and depending on when you bought her. If you just bought her she is going to need some time to get use to you. When I was little my family had a dog for the first two weeks he would not eat his food unless no one was around he was kind of paranoid. So just give her some time, she will come around.

she is still very much a pup, she wont get all the way out of that pup mindset till shes 1-2 yrs old... and pups are very playful... so this is kinda normal... not to mention that she is really small, so when you pick her up shes moving up several feet, so i imagine some of it is fear of hieghts... someone might have accedently dropped her b4 you got her.... she'll more than likely grow out of it and get used to you guys though.....

good juck! God Bless!

Dear...NO DOG(NONE! breed or mix makes NO DIFFERENCE!!) NO DOG likes to be picked up & mauled/squeezed!! That's an APE/HUMAN thing ,NOT dog!!!

she will probably grow out of it and then you won't be able to make her stay outta your lap. our pom was that way. once she learns and understands that you are her owner and you are the one that loves and cares for her she will become attached to you and then let you love on her more... she still is a puupy too though...give her a couple of months...good luck.... :)

Don't try to pick her up if she's in that state of mind...wait until she's more relaxed...
