Also, if you know of any human foods that they shouldn't eat, I would appreciate that information, too.

They should not eat chocolate, i know that for sure so i suggest you dont feed your dog anything thats very sweet. Also I dont think its a good idea to feed them human food because it becomes a habit and your dog wont eat anything else. I know this because it happened to my friend. Her dog learned to eat when she is eating and now he keeps bothering her every time he sees her preparing a meal. You can give your dog human food but not that much.

my dog climbed on a table once and ate an entire chocolate cake and didn't get sick. that was five years ago, so far there haven't been any long term effects either. i sometimes share food with my dogs (usually meat), but they know that their main source of food is coming from their dog bowls. which human foods will or won't make a dog sick really depends on the dog and it's size. any kind of human food given to a dog should be in limited amounts. chocolate, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, mushrooms, and raisins/grapes, are some of the main things that they shouldn't eat...the list is endless. if you do a search on the web for 'foods toxic to dogs' plenty of resources will come up.

I am always amazed at how so many people buy into the "dog food only" line. Dogs are meat eaters. Descended from wolves who are meat eaters. Feed your dog meat.
Dog foods are usually "meat by products"and a bunch of fillers like wheat and meals that a lot of dogs are allergic to. Do you even have a clue about what meat by products are? If you did you wouldnt give it to your dog.
And dont think the dry foods are any better. Do you know that the coating on dry food is usually fermented and rotting meat juice?
If you are worried about vitamins and minerals, there are many supplements on the market.
And that brings up another point. If the dog foods are so healthy, why are there so many supplements and additives on the market?
Its a money making scam for pet food companies and the vets that get paid to reccomend their "favorite" brands.
Read up on this stuff. Check with dog breeders and champion dog owners. Get off your duff and cook for your dog.

Yes. Some foods eaten by humans can be toxic to dogs. Among the best-known, of course, is chocolate. Other foods NOT to give to your dog would be grapes, raisins, fruit pits & seeds, onions, garlic (though many dog treats contain garlic in small amounts), avocados, coffee, alcohol, mushrooms, broccoli, rhubarb leaves, persimmons, potatoes, tomatoes, macadamia nuts, human vitamin/mineral supplements, and anything spoiled or rotten. Also avoid sugar and salt. A lot of people give their dogs plain, unseasoned meats, plain rice, and veggies like carrots and green beans. We've done this with our 8 month old pup for super-special treats. He loves it, and doesn't seem to have any trouble with digestion or weight-gain (yet). If your dog has worms, this is an issue unrelated to diet (unless he's eating a lot of feces or dead animals) and requires the attention of a veterinarian. Take a stool sample (poo sample) to your vet - they often have handy-dandy tools that are similar to a medicine bottle; the cap is attached to this thing that takes a cross-section of poo, then closes nicely into the canister (no touching required). Have your vet analyze it, then s/he can recommend an appropriate de-wormer in an appropriate dosage. Edit: I forgot to mention chicken bones (any bird bones, really)... those, of course, are no-nos because they can splinter and damange/obstruct the digestive tract.

It is important to consistently feed dogs the same food (some breeds more sensitive than others) to keep from upsetting their digestive system. You can feed boiled rice, and either chicken or reduced fat hamburger. You do not want to give them spices or salt. Never chocolate. I have heard potatoes are also bad. Bones are only good if they are large and will not break or splinter because they could get stuck in the throat (never chicken bones). A diet of just dog food is best.

Of course, dogs' main diet should consist of dog food in order to ensure they get the proper nutrients. However, as far as I know, it is okay to give dogs human food occasionally. We do not give our dogs meat that has bones in it as they can actually cut the dogs if they splinter or become shards. Some argue that chocolate is not healthy, but we have researched it, and you have to give your dog an incredible amount of chocolate (depending on body weight, though) to even increase their heart rates. Basically, the only things we don't give our dogs are meat with bones. Our dogs will eat leftover potatoes, pizza, tiny scraps of meat we give them, hot dogs as an occasional treat, potato chips, etc. I think the main rule of thumb is to not feed them so much human feed that they're not hungry for their dog food. Also, do NOT attempt to just feed them human food. At least, I wouldn't recommend it.

I feed my dog a ground beef/white rice mixture, meat scraps cut up small, once in awhile, a piece of cheese for a treat, leftover gravy mixed with his dog food....stuff like that. But never anything super rich, sugary, or fatty.
Dogs can have an adverse reaction to chocolate. And unsweetened canned cocoa (like the stuff you use in recipes) can be fatal to dogs. Also, ibuprofen (Advil, MOtrin) will kill a dog if they ingest it. Another thing that can poison an animal or small child is antifreeze. It needs to be kept away from them because it has a sweet smell and flavor and they have been known to like the taste, drink a good amount of it, and keel over. It's vey sad, I believe it shuts down their organs.

Don't give a dog chocolate. He will get really sick and maybe die. Why do you want to give your dog people food anyway. Your dog could get fat and whenever you eat he/she will want some and will beg. If you want a dog that pesters you while eating good luck. A dog can practically eat anything. NO CHOCOLATE. You can give your dog healthy stuff. Grapes, lettuce whatever. Hope this helps you.

My dog eats anything and he never gets sick. I read an article that they should stay away from coffee, onions, and chocolate but my dogs had all three and hes never been sick a day in his life. He also got hit my a car though and just kept running around so i'm thinking hes an extrodinary case.
