My mom put my sisters and I in a toddler bed at the age of 1. I put my son in a toddler bed when he was 10 months old.
I honestly think that it's dependent on the child. If you feel he's "big" enough to be in a toddler bed then by all means. In my opinion I think he's probabally ready, but, like I said, that's up to you and your son. If you're comfortable with him sleeping in a big boy bed, then I say go for it. It'll be much easier on you because you won't have to go and pick him up all the time. (He's got to be heavy!!!)
I'm pretty sure that I read in a book ("What to Expect the First Year") that when the child can get off a couch or the parent's bed safely, then he/she should be okay in a toddler bed. I can't remember where I read that (either the book or a parents magazine), but I know that's what it said.
When I put my son in his toddler bed he seemed to mature a little bit more because he had a sense of independence. My husband and I made sure, though, that in the morning the only place he could really go was our bedroom to wake us up. Now we have a 14 month old alarm clock that picks our eyes and steps on our bladders to make sure we know he's there!!!!!
Good luck!!
P.S. We put pillows on the floor for the first 2-3 weeks to cushion him if he fell off the bed & we had a little slumber party the first night to make sure he would be comfortable. He had a blast!!!

My son is 22 months and is still in a crib too. He has shown no interest in a bed and does not try to climb out of the crib, so I just figured I wouldn't push the issue. I think maybe at Christams we will get him a big boy bed and start the move. I am expecting in late spring and will need the crib then, but no sooner. Hope that helps!

my son is 2 years and 9 months old. He will be 3 on Halloween and although he can climb in and outta his crib with the best of them he still is in the crib. I have said I am going to change it to the toddler bed when he turns 3 (which is just 3 months). After reading your question makes me think if i should have done this already. Sooo I don't have a good answer to your question..lOL

Is your son climbing out of the crib or trying to climb out of the crib? If so, then it's time for a toddler bed.

If your son can climb out of his crib, he will be much safer in a toddler bed or a low twin bed now. If you opt for the twin bed, there are safety rails available at Toys-R-Us that just slide under the mattress.
Good luck!

Go ahead and get him accustomed to a bed. You would be better off with a single bed and box springs sitting on the floor. He can grow into that. A toddler bed he'll just grow out of. I put my two year old in a bed when she was about 27 months. She was ready. More than ready.

i put my son in a toddler bed when he was 16 months old because he was crawling out of his crib... he is now almost 2 and its very nice because i put a baby gate in his bedroom (his bedroom is all child proof) and have a tv sitting on the floor which he can puch his tape in if he wants and a toy box with toys, at night i put him in there and he plays and when he is tired he crawls into bed! its sooooo nice..i think if your child is almost 2 it would be a good idea for a "big boy" bed

He should be ready for a toddler bed, I put my daughter in one when she was about 18 months and she did fine. Just remember that this means you'll have to take more safety precautions in his room, like tying up any window blind cords, and I would suggest locking his door from the outside at night if his bedroom is upstairs, that way he won't venture out of his room in the night and fall down the stairs(we did that because we didn't have a baby gate for the stairs).
