Yes, the toothed belt is the cam belt. It is also known as a "timing belt" as its function is to coordinate the opening and closing of the valves with the rise and fall of the pistons in each cylinder--hence it provides the proper timing for these two functions.

Now I do not know about your particular model of VW, but most of the VWs with which I am familiar have what are called "non-interference" engines. What this means is that the lowest point any valve can reach inside the cylinder is still higher than the highest point each piston may reach. Accordingly, when the belt breaks your engine stops running and you coast off the road without power, however, no damage is done to the engine.

Accordingly, if you are not averse to having to unexpectedly walk or call a tow truck, and money is tight, you can take a chance on the belt without so considerable a risk. Sometimes those belts can last 50,000 miles or more past the reccommended life. The only caveat I offer to this is that if you also are hearing valve tap it may be indicative of the belt having become stretched, in which case I would go ahead and change it.

not familar with lupo what engin is in it can get some info for me so i can better help you with info needed. are you in another country? cam belt and timing belt are the same though check your owners manual for scheduled maint.

correct toothed belt and cam belt are the same. Please replace the belt before it breaks.
