I'm not sure about a definite answer on this, but my mum is a hairdresser and she has always had to wear completely closed in shoes to work. She was told at college to do this so that the hairs dont bed into the foot and grow there, also someone asked this a while ago on Radio 1 and i think that the answer was yes it can. But i dont think its essential to shower it off right away, it quite rare to get 'hair splinters' unless you're around hair alot (back to the hairdresser issue).

Well I'm not sure if it takes root but they can stick in you. I am a hair stylist and oh maybe twice a year I will have to dig a hair out of my hand or arm. It will start hurting like a splinter but once I pull it out it's fine.

Yes!! Not many people know this, but that's why you see those guys at the beach with hair all over their shoulders and back.
Thanks for bringing this to the attention of people who don't know.
