I have the same hair as you, as you can see from my avatar. Same description, except mine gets frizzy. I'm growing it out so my hair doesn't get so curly, and I've got some blond highlights (my hair is brown) they really made my hair look nicer too, maybe you could try it. Anywayz, what I do is gel up my hair after a shower, then I put mousse. Then I leave it to air dry. Sometimes I put on some hairspray(curl-enhancing or normal) too, after the mousse. It leaves my hair looking wet and curly for a few hours, it's really nice, you should try it! Hope this helps!
P.S. the reason my hair got frizzy is because I layered it, so maybe you should try and just some non-drastic hairstyles before you go and cut it, ok?

have you ever tried straightening it? i think it would look great! and the next time you get it cut, get some layers all over. i have thick wavy hair and when i kept it one length my hair just looked messy. but when i cut it with layers, my hair waved up naturally and looks so good if i just let it air dry! i suggest that you work with your natural hair rather than against it, although straightening does fall under that category, i still do it sometimes.
and side swept bangs would be REALLY cute!
hope that helps! good luck! :]
