Do people realize how stupid they sound when they use "what not" in a scentence ? ?? it doesn't make any sense!! I wish people would think before they spoke instead of just hearing someone they "thought" was smart using a stupid term like "what not" and incorporating it into their vocabulary and then thinking they were speaking all smart and intelligently. Whats wrong with these people????

I agree, I think it's strange. Just a habit on their part - ask them what "whatnot" means next time - then laugh. :)

It's like some people would put the word "stuff" in every sentence they speak. It's a trendy habit of certain era. It will go away after a while. I haven't heard "what not" for a while now. But I hear "stuff like that" everywhere.

Or like the Jerky Boys, when the guy was talking about his dog. He said "My dog's always snappin' and snarlin' - He's real high strung, cuz I'm always beatin' on him and what not."

You know what I hate? I hate it when people say "irregardless" and what not. Since when did "irregardless" become a word??? To me THAT sounds stupid.

"What not" takes the place of describing all of the other details you have chose not to share, usually because they're mundane and asinine to share.

They use "what not" so that they don't have to go through every detail of what they did.
