I see it all the time kids that are 12 or 13 hanging around Cinemas or shopping centes dressed up to the nines in all the latest fashion trends and caked in make-up....

But I saw a group of girls today in the supermarket and one of them was wearing a REAL (believe me Ican tell or it must have been a very convincing fake) Louis Vuitton messenger bag... WTF??! I live in a working class area so this is not 'normal'.

Kids being an adult is not what it's cracked up to be, and your an adult for a good 50, 60, or if you're really healthy 80 years. Climb some trees, hang around at the park, be kids for a change.
I wonder if Mr S. Freud would have anything to say about this?

Is it materialism gone mad? Do children have a childhood today?

yes kids have a childhood today but it is different from ours. We did not have TV or PCs we knew very little of the big wide world. We had small, homely communities, they have the world wide web. It was easier for us , life was slower. I feel for the youth of today ,life moves at such a pace and everything that gives them pleasure costs a small fortune. I am lucky my grandchildren still enjoy simple things like football, swimming, cycling and so on but the ads on tv also make them feel they must have all the latest materialistic things also. We did not have the option of the costly stuff when we were young, if we had would we have been any different from today's kids?.

Have been seeing the same as you and you know what? The only thing I can come up with is that the adults (so-called) that are raising children today have no time for their kids. Latch-key kids started in the late 70s and today it is no better. I feel sorry for these kids...they have no direction..live only for their immediate pleasure and the parents will do anything to keep them out of their hair. Now, I have seen a few kids that are responsible and are searching for answers to today's problems. They are few and far between. I guess it boils down to who is raising who..the parents raising the kids or the kids raising themselves? In my day, a kid worked, earned his/her way and was taught values. Let's hope that the kids today will find their way and go beyond the lack of good parentage.

Its our society today. There is to much of everything in magazines, books, television, and games. As time goes on, and nothing changes, a childhood will be something of the past. Also, it all depends on the way a child was raised. There are still parents out there that put limits on their children.

Television and magazines. They see so much nowadays it's shocking. I heard from a mother recently that her 11 year old daughter along with another girl was arranging to have sexual intercourse with some boys at school !!!! I so wish children were children again, they just don't think further than whatever it is they are thinking of; they don't know the consequences of their actions. Schools throw sex down their throats instead of maths , geography, cookery and sport. What are we to do .... what can you do?? I feel sorry for them.

I think that parents are too busy trying to keep up with the fast moving society that they try to buy their kids whatever they want to make up for not spending enough time with them. My mom does the same thing but I know better than to make myself look older than I am. They don't know what they're getting themselves into. I know from experience that that's not what they want. They just put up a front so that they'll fit in. They just need God in there life. They want someone to pay attention to them because their parents don't.

it's so true. you're right. kids to to be kids. enjoy their childhood while they can. they're in such in a hurry to grow up that they miss out on the most important part of life. @ 12 i was running around naked in the rain. so much fun and care free. i didn't understand the concept of money (because i didn't have any) until 15. the parent need to tell thier kids of how to enjoy it. and stop giving them so much money that they can buy things that i couldn't imagine of getting when i was a kid.

people are scared to let there kids play outside now, its a scary world and its such a shame because kids are missing out on their childhood. Parents seem to be obsessed with having well groomed immaculatly dressed kids to impress all the other parents, which means the kids arent allowed to play outside incase they mess up their gucci outfits.

They watch WAY too much TV. TV now a days shows that you are "Hot" if you dress a certain way and wear make up a certain way. Most girls want to look "Hot" or get boys attention.
My opinion they are WAY too young! As the decades go by the girls are looking more and more slutty at such a young age!
