it's for the baby.

However I always buy a basic gifts for the baby and something really nice for the mommy. whether it be a gift certificate for her first date out of the house, a massage therapy day at a spa, a care package containing nail polish, bath soaps or travel containers she cant use for her hospital stay. Even gift certificates for mommy and baby portraits are good.

I agree with the answers you have gotten so far. The gifts are usually for the baby and the event takes some of the stress of being pregnant away. I also like to give the expectant Mother a some gift. EX: Bubble bath,a nice calming c.d.:if a close family member or friend a cute little card that says baby sitting for free-and then you decide when and how long you are available;Being a new Mother is very exhausting, especially if you breast feed. A short nap knowing your child is in good hands is beneficial.

It's in honor of the mother having a baby, so both in a way. But more for the mother, because I'm sure the baby could care less.

For the mom and baby, But, I think it's a little more for the baby because everybody gets baby stuff....they usually don't get the mom something just the baby.

Both technically, but mostly for the mom i'd say. Only because its things that the mother will be using: eg. Breast Pump, infant tub, changing table, burp cloths, etc. Its a relief for the mom as shes not having to go out and purchase all of these items.

In general, though, its a celebration of new life!

:)

Both. Most of the gifts given are for the baby, but then the mom is being blessed too because she doesn't need to spend a billion dollars because of all the gifts she got. :O)

Probably the mom. Since the baby doesn't know what's going on, and it's absolute torture for all those who attend-- it must be the mom. She's the one that gets to do the unwrapping. The rest of us just get drunk off of bad champagne and smile politely and can't wait to go home.

I think it is to honor the birth of the baby, the celebration of new life. Celebration of the family unit.

Mostly the baby. That's why he/she gets all of the gifts. However, an occasional gift for mom is usually really appreciated. New parents only need so many diapers, bottles, blankets, and sleepers. A nice bottle of wine or something that is definitely only for mom and dad always goes over well.
