Sorry for the gross details i'm just looking for specific answers. Thanks

The doctor you went to seems like a putz. He needs to go to a wound specialist ~~~ the sooner the better!

i had a similar bump appear on my leg several times. Turns out it was a staph infection. I lived in a dorm and another resident had the issue, was not careful and I got unlucky. I had to take antibiotics for 2.5 weeks to help clear the infection. He should definitely get a 2nd opinion because, the hole should not be that big/bad. I had a hole in my leg but it wasn't anything like you've described.just have him go to another doctor and suggest they make sure there is no more infection.

This is an abcess. It is caused by an infection, and is your body's way of protecting itself from the infection spreading to the rest of the body. Your boyfriend was given a tetanus shot in case the infection was caused a piece of metal that somehow was stuck under his skin.

You can see more information on abcesses on wikipedia, at the link below. The article is quite good.

I'm assuming the doctor lanced the abcess to drain it? That is the first step of treatment. Your boyfriend should also have been given antibiotics so that the infection doesn't get worse.

Some sort of abscess. Maybe from a bugbite, ingrown hair.
Find a new doc.
