My sister became a stewardess in 1983. Then all of a sudden she was screaming at us to call her a flight attendant. She still is one, and for the same company too, so she is a Senior FLight Attendant. She was bi tchy before, but now shes worse. The passengers make her that way. Poor sis! Back in the 80's her uniforms were spiffy and professional. They are ok now, but not as nice as it was then. Her hair always had to be perfect and she always had to watch her weight. Now I see FA with wild hair in ponytails. Oh the other day when I dropped my Mom off at the airport, NONE of the ticket agents were wearing uniforms. They ALL were wearing tshirts and pants, and no-fuss hair-dos. What happened to professionalism???
Anyway so things are different now. Try to apply to be a FA, you will have to attend school WITHOUT PAY for up to 6 weeks!!! Who can do this???? Teenagers with parents, rich people, etc. Spoiled, and no customer caring, why should they? All they want to do is party and travel. Back in the day, they joined to marry pilots and to travel and have a cool career. They were sweet, pretty, nicer, more honest, more caring. Anyway, they currently attend a school where its all safety lessons, and barf bag lessons. My sis has some really awful barf bag stories.
I had a FA yell at me once because I couldnt finish my drink when she was carrying the trash around. She said " AWWWCCKKK there is liquid in your cup!!!!!" I said "It was 2 sips, and I told you, and you said to put it in the trash anyway!". Its funny, last month when I flew, the FA's announced on the speakers "We are collecting your drinks, no matter the content". Now that is better than how I was treated before!

Well, there are still stewardesses on airplanes..
If you're talking about 'quality' of these stewardesses, I don't have an answer for you. Maybe the flight attendant schools have gotten worse over the years. Who knows. Planes are for travel, not comfort.

Stewardesses were flight attendants back when manners mattered and flying was a special event. People also believed in the basic good in humanity, not expecting terrorists toting carry-ons. Now, it's like taking a potentially lethal bus trip and although flight attendants are still mannerly, they're more focused on getting everyone seated and just doing enough of their jobs to earn a paycheck.

It sounds better than "chute poppers." The airlines would love to get rid of FA's but regulations require that they be carried to help the pax evacuate the airplane in the event of an emergency.
It's a hell-ish career these days...I'm surprised that so many still want the job.

Babybro got it right!
This is ALL about political correctness. The argument that there are guys now doing the job falls flat on its face because they would (have been) called stewards, the root of the word stewardess.
These are nautical terms carried forward from cruise ship days, which the original airline travel resembled closely. Then came jets and falling fares and classless people traveling the airways. After that came the minions of P/C, who decided that any word ending in 'ess' was offensive to the female to whom it was applied..........
