I've got a plasma and cable is so expensive. I only like a few channels like A&E and Bravo - but I don't feel like I'm reading as much as I'd like because of the tele.

Has anyone ever just gotten rid of their tele, and how did it feel? Was it liberating? I am so tempted to do so! But how will I play my PS2 games?

Actually, here are a few shows I like, too, that keep me from getting rid of cable: Hustle, Rescue Me, anything on Court TV, history stuff, and soon - that damn heavy metal show on Sundays - can't recall the name.

I did for a year. Gave my 27" to a relative who needed one when I moved to Chicago. For a year I used a small set for occasional news. I found myself listening to the radio a lot. I loved WGN 720, but I also listened to it in the car. Milt Rosenberg was captivating (you should listen online sometimes, his shows are quite erudite).

But I missed my DVD movies... so I broke down and got a 34" Sony HD tube (heavy as hell) when Circuit city closed and hooked up cable. I got several HD channels so it was awsome, and 5.1 sound too... sweet. But I moved away to go back to school and now I only get 4 channels in HD :-(

But there are several shows I like now on SciFi and USA. But now that I am studying communications I like to pay attention to popular culture, analytically. Not to mention I'm writing screenplays on spec, so staying current helps.

Course, as soon as I break down and get an X-box and HD connectors, they come out with the X-box 360. Darn Microsoft! Darn them to Heck!

The television is the single most powwerful educational tool ever invented; you can learn almost anything with it. Yet what do we use it for? You know the answer.

But think about it; you could take a class with it, learn a language with it, see places far away without going anywhere, the possibilities are endless.

Try not to get disappointed with the things other people do with it; see it as a tool for you to use for your own purposes. It may not be long before you can choose only the stations you want through your telephone company, the technology is already here (but blocked by politics so far). The TV justs sits there; it's up to you to use it well.

I never got rid of my TV, but I just don't watch it as much as I used to. I just watch the morning news and the evening news to stay current on what's going on. The rest is reading the newspaper. I actually read a lot more magazines and books. It feels great. I don't have a PS2, but I have a PSP, and that I only play when I have to wait for someone somewhere and don't feel like reading something.

Just like anything else, tv depends on how you use it. The wonder of tv is the readiness and actuality of information, and of course the visual presentation beats reading. It's great to see footages of news rather than reading the static letters on a newspaper; experience live sports actions; discover new places you haven't been to before; and learn new things through channels like National Geographic/Discovery Channel. If you think it cuts up your reading time, just limit yourself to a certain duration of tv time per day - and make sure you don't start watching any rubbish so you won't ever get hooked!

did you know u can limit the amount of channels you have by caling your cable company, but it depends on what company you have. we used to watch tv all the time but then my parents got rid of the tv and our grades went way up because we had more free time to study and read, then they rewarded us by bringing it back, but we ar not allowed to watch tv on school nights. plus, you dont have to throw out the tv, just limit the amount of time you watch it for.
