Hiccups are the diaphram having spasms.

You get rid of them by "pushing" down the diaphram, and holding it down through a couple cycles of the hiccups by sucking in as much air as you can, and then trying to suck in a little more, really filling your lungs, and concentrating on pushing the diaphram down with the air pressure.

i don't know what causes them, but try this to get rid of them...
(u need two people)... Hold the person with the hiccups hands, and look in there eyes. Tell them to squeeze your hands everytime they are about to hiccup. Then say everytime they squeeze your hands you'll give them a dollar. Then wait. There hiccups will be gone... This always works, i've never given out ANY money....

A hiccup is an unintentional movement (spasm) of the diaphragm, the muscle at the base of the lungs. The spasm is followed by rapid closure of the vocal cords, which produces a distinctive sound.

There is no sure way to stop hiccups, but there are a number of common suggestions that may be effective:

Hold your breath.
Breathe repeatedly into a paper bag.
Drink a glass of cold water.
Eat a teaspoon of sugar.

I don't know what causes hiccups. But I do know how to get rid of them. Eat a spoonful of peanut butter, slowly. For the last 10 years it has worked for my daughter. Gets rid of her hiccups every time.

Hiccups(sometimes called hiccoughs) are the result of the body trying to rid itself of demons. Removing the head temporarily from the body can often expell the demon but is, it should be warned, frequently fatal.

i have no idea what causes them, but whenever my friends have them we ask them "what do fish swim in?" they look puzzled and say "water." It distracts them and for some reasons the hiccups go away.
