It's not just you. They are pretty much useless organizations that are out to line their own pockets and step on the backs of the people of the world. Oil for Food etc.
Where else could Libya be put in charge of human rights? Only in the U.N.
And both organizations REALLY figured out that whole nuclear weapons thing. NOT!!!!

1. Have you forgotten Pan Am 103 ? The UN got the Libyan bombers to face trial & the UN also facilitated many other small steps that rehabilitated Libya. That is not to suggest Libya is the worlds greatest country - but neither are they the major terrorist threat, that they once were.
2. Has no-one heard of UNICEF & the work they do ?
3. Has no-one heard of WHO & the work they do ?
4. Has no-one heard about the 85,000 military & civilian peacekeepers ? BTW when W was allowing Israel to continue their mindless bombing in Lebanon - the UN peacekeepers were among those being killed.
5. Has no-one heard of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ?
If "worthwhile" means declaring war, then the UN is not doing it's bit. If you mean finding diplomatic solutions & improving the basic conditions for life in many different parts of the world, I'd say their doing more than any single country.
Remember - just because a policy isn't 100% successful, doesn't mean it failed. For example consider the Nuclear non-proliferation treaty - North Korea & Iran make this look bad right now - but consider the countries that either had or were trying to aquire nuclear weapons, that no longer are - Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, SOUTH Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Algeria, Ukraine, Kazakhstan & Belarus.

As I answer this blog, NATO is actively replacing US troops in Afghanistan! These are combat troops that are performing search and destroy missions against the Taliban. The US hasn't completely pulled out it's forces and probably will not, however it will work with NATO troops' to keep this activity against the Taliban, in full force.
The UN, on the other hand, can only send in, what they call, peacekeepers. This is a band of observers who cut bait and run, the first time they see any aggression.
It's obvious that the UN observers were completely useless in Lebanon, and they really had no business being there. They cannot keep peace in a war zone, therefore they should have vacated the moment hostilities began. Indeed it is sad that four of these UN peacekeepers lost their lives, one can only look towards the Hierarchy of the UN and ask, why were they there in the first place?

Nato is currently taking over most military operations in Afghanistan from the U.S under the command of the British who are already running Helmand.
Bosnia was not predominantly U.S at all, and was a U.N mission which is whay it was such a screw up. Kosovo was a NATO mission led by the US and Brits, but including Canada and the first overseas German deployment since WW2.
NATO is not a peace organisation but is a defensive alliance set up by some western european nations and the USA to resist a soviet invasion of europe.
The U.N is toothless.

Nato is taking over the security for the southern half of Afghanistan.
Nato oversaw the bombing of Serbia to save the lives of Kosovars.
NATO is far superior to the UN, I'm beginning to think.

NATO is by far the superior organization. Check out their website and you can see the real accomplishments they have achieved and have in progress. Although the group follows the advice of the politicians of the member counties, they are led by military officers who know how to get results.
The UN needs a serious enema to purge itself of the corruption and ineffective professional diplomats.

At least the UN has provided a place for discussion. They could do much better if we moved the UN out of the USA. Like in Brazil or Indonnesia where everything won't get blamed on us Yankees...and the delegates won't get so corrupted and complacent.
