There are a lot of dogs they could have. My grandson is severely allergic. He is on meds and gets extremely sick. My daughter got a Poodle/Alhaso Apso and he has not had an attack in two years. He plays with the dog and the dog sleeps with him.
They could get either one of the above breeds. I have a Maltese and my grandson doesn't have a problem with him either. If you go on the intenet it will give a list of which breeds are the best.
The Maltese is the best because because they do not have an undercoat of fur. The Yorkie is the only other breed I know that doesn't either. Because they don't have the under coat it makes them better with allergies. Their fur is not like dog fur, it is like your hair. They cannot be out in extreme hot or cold weather because they don't have the protection other dogs have from the elements.
It depends also, on how bad your uncle is. He would certainly want to try the breeds one by one. He should pet them, rub his face on them, etc. But I would research it too. They don't want to get one and not be able to keep it......
Good Luck, I love my Maltese and they are very intelligent.
KAYKAY..............I don't want to argue with you, but you are incorrect. My daughter's dog does not shed. My Maltese does not shed. My neighbors have a pure bred Poodle and it does not shed. I don't understand why you said that...............................

There are some breeds that are considered to be hypoallergenic, but if the person is severly allergic, sometimes even those kinds of dogs are not suitable.
These breeds include: Poodles (not mixes, just regular poodles), soft coated wheaten terriers, bichons, havanese, schnauzers, kerry blues, and lowchens. THere are probably a couple of others as well.
Do some research on these breeds and then choose one that will fit your lifestyle. Then contact some breeders to see if you can visit with the dogs to see how your uncle reacts.

People with animal allergies should not get animals unless they have found a medication to help. Some dogs such as poodles are often advertised to be different or "not shed"... well, they do. When it doesnt work out they end up banned to the backyard or dropped off at the shelter. We currently have 4 poodles, purebred. Dont believe that stuff. Im not sure what allergy meds they have now but you should talk to a doctor to see if theyve got anything that will take care of it.

Poodles have a reputation for being less allergy causing. The fur holds the allergy causing skin flakes (not the hair like previously believed) to stay on the dog and off the allergic person and their things.
Have him see a doctor. There are treatments now that can relieve allergies if not cure them.

While everything above is correct, they aremissing one vital piece of information.
What is he allergic to? Is it dog/cat hair or Dander?
The suggestions above are great for someone allergic to pet hair, but do nothing for someone allergic to dander.
Dander is the dried flakes of skin that come off of all mammals. The majority of dust found in someones home is dander, either human or animal.
Before you get anything, have him go to an allergest and get tested. If the allergy is to hair, the above suggestions will work.
If the allergy is to Dander, unfortunatley, there is nothing that can be done.

They do have certain hairless breeds out there for both dogs and cats. But don't know how much they cost or where to get them. The hairless breeds don't have any hair which makes them perfect for people who have allergies. but if ur looking for something with hair, try something with short hair and doesn't shed much.

Consult a vet. As far as I know, a short haired cat
that is groomed often will not cause allergy issues
in those that have issues with cats.
This also pertains to dogs as well.

The only thing I can say is, that if he really wants an animal that he is allergic to, then to be put on allegra. Allegra is an allergy pill that stops allergies completely. You can visit www.allegra.com for further questions on pricing and prescriptions.
