Cellulitis is a spreading infection of the skin that usually begins as a small area of tenderness, swelling, and redness on the skin. As this red area begins to spread, the person may develop a fever, sometimes with chills and sweats, and swollen lymph nodes ("swollen glands") near the area of infected skin.

Unlike impetigo, which is a very superficial skin infection, cellulitis refers to an infection involving the skin's deeper layers; the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. The main bacteria involved in cellulitis is Staphylococcus ("staph"), the same bacteria that causes many cases of impetigo. Occasionally, other bacteria may cause cellulitis as well.

Oh my goodness! I have had cellulitis twice and at one time they thought they were going to have to amputate my leg. Yes I have sensitivities to heat/sun. When the cellulitis starts I spike a fever. The last time I was in the hospital it was 106 degrees and I don't remember a thing. My legs swell, are hot to touch and seem to burn from the inside out and they actually blister, not small blisters but huge ones which break and then I have red raw marks which scab and have to heal. They heal by whirlpool and what the doctor calls an unaboot which is a gauze wrap that is soaked in calamine lotion and zinc oxide ointment. I do not have diabetes or any other ailment. I have been on Keflex antibiotic several times for months. When I heal I have brown discoloration too and unfortunately my legs appear to have scarred in places. Good luck to you. This is such a nasty problem. Add: Also when the cellulitis is full blown my leg has the appearance of a glazed ham and is twice its normal size.
