We may be good at queueing, but we have not yet perfected the art of choosing the fastest queue in a Post Office!

If you're in a queue, then you recognise that the people in front of you have already been waiting for a bit and that they would not be happy to lose their place in the queue because of a rude person pushing in, just as you yourself would not appreciate someone shoving you out of the way. It's a simple nicety. I guess we're good at it here in Britain because we understand that it's simply the polite, respectful thing to do- years of being taught that trait by society.

Finland is the same kind. Here people do stand in line and won't shove in. If someone does that, he/she would get noted by saying "hey, the end of the line is that way!". I have done that few times myself when some drunken dude tried to get in front of me on a taxi line in one cold winter night after clubbing. I had waited like 30 mins in -25'C and this jerk thinks can just shove in! No way. ;P

As an American, I've not experience people shoving in line ever. People here generally take their turns politely. I've travelled around most of Europe and the only country I noticed this not being the case was Italy.

The British have a long tradition of good grooming and good manners. This shows in every aspect of their society. Queues are so orderly because the people are polite and recognize the others in the line as deserving of courtesy. If nothing else, they are orderly to give homage to their upbringing.

I think it's just their nature. The British are very reserved and polite people. I admire them for their good manners!

Beats me but I doubt its a genetic trait or anything.
How come Brits hold grudges so long? Also not a genetic trait Im sure, just an observation, like yours.
Sorry if it seemed rude.

They still believe in politeness. Indians picked this up for the most part from them as well.
