I guess you would have to follow your heart on that one. If you feel that action is going to get you somewhere than go for it. If it's not really going to accomplish anything than inaction would probably be the best way to go. If you think beating on someone will change what they did or are going to do, go ahead. But, usually wasting your time or breath on someone who just doesn't get it, isn't worth it. So just move on.

In a situation where the outcome is ambiguous, either action or inaction is the right course. Actually, inaction becomes action.

almost everything in life is ambiguous, even things when it may seem 100% fail proof. The way to know to take action or inaction is determined by your character. If you have good charater along with wisdom, then you will know what to do. Let me know if you have a specific example in mind.

If we know in advance the outcome will be ambiguous, then the means to this end will be equally as ambiguous.

Deciding not to act is, for all intents and purposes, an act. You have two choices... 1) allow events to take their course without intervention; 2) intervene somehow to influence the course of events. Selecting which path to follow IS the defining act.

You have to take these things situation by situation. The right decision usually lies in the details.

Then your decision should be based on other criteria, such as which is morally or ethically the correct choice.
