All three of my boys did the exact same thing, and as abnormal as it may seem, it is perfectly normal. It worried me too when my first son started doing it but after consulting his pediatrician several times, her answer was always the same its just a phase and it will pass. Mine all three stopped as soon as there teeth came in or when they got used to that new feeling back there.

My son used to do the same thing he actually made himself sick a few times. He will grow out of it eventually. Until then just make sure that you keep an eye on him and take his hand out of his mouth when you catch him doing it.

The only thing I have to add (good advice already given) is when you remove his hand from his mouth to make sure he knows you are serious- don't make him think it is cute or a game because that will only make him do it more.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, I think it is quite normal. I remember mine doing it.
If it is too bad, buy him a teething ring, they seem to bite on one of those without gagging.
Hope this helps.
