A friend of mine had an operation to remove a tumour from her stomach and after about 6 months it still wasn`t healing so the doctor had to reseal the area where he had removed the tumour from. This time he said he had done a more secure job and it will definately heal and it did.
A few months later the doctor discovered another, smaller tumour in the same area and she had to have another operation to remove it, just over a year later the area has opened up where the doctor had operated on the second tumour, the same as what happend with the 1st operation. Now she has to go back AGAIN and have ANOTHER operation to seal it, just like the first operation. Im annoyed about it because i feel he has made the same mistake twice.
(((So my question is...Should my friend be entitled to some compensation or even some free treatment?))) because each operation is costing thousands. If the doctor had done a more secure job of sealiin the 1st place it would have only been 2 operations instead of 4

Thank you for your quick answers.

Regarding wound care, she followed the doctors instrutions verycarefully, which inluded a very strict diet.

The tumours were cancerous, the doctor said the 1st had opened because of the acid in her stomach but all stomach have acid. He said the second had opened because of the hot weather which sounds a bit lame to me.

The tumours were inside the stomach and were treated with laser.

Again thank you for taking the time to answer.
As far as the doctor can tell there is no trace of cancer left anymore which is great news.
The dissapointment is after what happend after the 1st operation where he had to reseal the area more permanent, i wold have thought he would have done the permanent seal on the second area so she wouldnt have to have another operation to seal it right like she did with the 1st.
They say people learn by mistakes but it seems that he didn`t and did the same thing as the first op.
Im trying hard not to suggest he has done it just to worm more money out of his patients, that would be soo wrong and cruel.

To Stephie

Thank you for your comments. :-)

The doctor has given her a temporary seal on the wound at the moment, its like a glue but it doesn`t last any more than a month.
So she has just a few weeks to get enough to pay for the main operation.

I will have to find out what insurance she has.
She had only just finished college when she had the first tumour and has only managed to get part time work because of her illness so you can guess her financial status especially after 3 previous ops and i don`t know how many tests.

Im sure we will get her through it along with her family and other friends.

Is she okay now?
Maybe she should see another dr, just to get the wound checked out. Bless her.
I know our hospital helped me out financially. We have pretty good insurance, but we just dont' make a lot income.
THe hospital helped us with the bills. She just needs to go the financial dept, and fill out information . They will need to know how much money she makes, if she has a savings, 401 K, cars, credit cars, reg bills and so on.
I hope this helps.

Sounds like there's more going on here than we know. Were the tumors cancerous or benign? Did the area not heal because her immune system was down or did other tumors press against the spot? Tell her to document everything and get a copy of every single report; she is entitled to this by law.

A surgeon cannot guarantee that every last cancer cell is removed as the result of surgery. Any remaining cells could lead to further tumors. The tumors are tissue destroying and could cause the issues he is undergoing. Cancer is not a black and white disease. They can no more tell you if the cancer is fully removed than they can tell you what your prognosis is

It's 50/50...... If she had done better 'wound care' it may have helped. Just because it was done by a doctor doesn't mean that he is 100percent at fault.
