Ha. From an ex-Catholic or ex-fundamentalist, I presume. Well, I like the way you put that "draw your own map". Teach your kids to love themselves and others, not to feel guilty about being human, you know?

I know exactly what you mean. It's a tragedy -- Christianity, supposed to be a message of joy and hope, and it has become exactly what you say -- teaching us to feel guilty about being alive. Chances are, you don't even know the half of it. I spent 10 years studying Christian history and spirituality. Asceticism -- hatred of the material world -- is the basis of Christian spiritual life. If you're happy, you should feel guilty; you're only holy if you're miserable. I've had enough of it. I'll take my kids to the woods on Sunday morning and show them God's temple.

I have a 4 year old and I don't plan to take him to church unless he requests to go as he gets older. I believe an overwhelming baptist (private christain school from pre-k through 8th grade)surrounding as I was growing up caused a lot more problems for me than anything else. I asked too many questions and was usually treated quite cruelly. And I don't want my son exposed to that kind of environment, we all draw our own maps and he should be allowed to draw his.

I vote "take them to a building every week and teach them to feel guilty about being alive" ... it's the practice of hundreds of millions ... and if so many believe in a practice, it can't be wrong ... can it?

if that's what church is (a building to teach ur kids to feel guilty about being alive), then it's a no good church. church is more then a building...it's people who gather together to worship God and study his word. it's real. but some churches ARE fake and PHONY. it's a matter of which church you choose.

Man, do you have the wrong idea about spirituality and Christianity or just faith in a higher being. God is about peace, forgiveness and love. The guilt you are talking about is being WITHOUT God.

I hope you find your way!

My suggestion would be to tell them about different religions, so they have a choice which religions to follow. It should be about their beliefs that are in accordance with that religion not just because the society said so.
