Jah? I am assuming that you are referring to the translators decision not to use the name "YHWH" (or Jehovah) in the NIV. Read the translators notes at the beginning. They explain it.

In Hebrew, the language of the Old Testament, the name of God was written without any vowels (YHWH). And the Jews never pronounced the name out of respect. Instead they add the vowels of the word Adonai (Lord) and would say "Lord" instead. When you reach the New Testament, the Greek word Lord is used. That is why Jesus is referred to as "Lord" throughout the New Testament.

This tradition has been carried over into most Bible translations, where YHWH is translated as LORD, with the word all in caps. The NIV translators followed this tradition.

The Jewish religious leaders were the first to stop using God's name out of a misapplication of a scripture that says we should not use God's name in vain. They felt it was improper to use God's name at all, and eventually the true pronounciation of God's name was lost, because they discontinued to use it. Many translators followed that same pattern, removing the name YHWH, Yahweh, or Jehovah from the Bible. You will notice from a study of the Bible that this is a practice that obviously went totally against God's wishes. See Psalms 83:18 and Exodus 9:16. Jehovah wants us to know and use His name. This is biblical. The question I have for you is, will you choose to listen to Jehovah, or all the people who will direct you otherwise?

God's name Jehovah has been taken out of most translation.Originally,the Jews became superstitious about saying God's name and substituted it with titles.The churches of Christendom have decided "whats good for the goose is good for the gander"and they too use titles such as "Lord" or "God".
The New World Translation Bible published by Jehovahs Witnesses has had God's name put back where it belongs.(Ps.83:18)
Do you know that God's name appeared about 7000 times just in the original Hebrew Scriptures!
The Churches play down the importance of God's name.
How are people supposed to develop a relationship with a nameless God?Even our animals have names.Yet,they try to tell us that the Creator of the universe is nameless!!

They took out the name Jehovah from the Bible seemingly because of two main reasons.

The first is that no one knows for sure the original pronunciation of the name Jehovah, because the tetragrammaton YHWH, has no vowels (because ancient Hebrew texts were written without vowels, only the consonants were used). However, accurate ways to say God's name are Jehovah and Yahweh. The English pronunciation is Jehovah, so I use Jehovah, but both are acceptable. :)
But not knowing it's original pronunciation isn't a solid reason for not using it or taking it out of the Bible since that really is 'taking from the Bible, the word of God' something Christians were told not to do in the very pages of the Bible!
Deuteronomy 4:2 says: "You must not add to the word that I am commanding you, neither must you take away from it, so as to keep the commandments of Jehovah your God that I am commanding you. "

Also, the original pronunication of Jesus' name is unknown as well.
Yeshua and Yehoshua are the most accurate as far as we know. But everyone knows of the name Jesus, have heard of it, or use it in worship! Now that seems a little strange on the part of those who choose to pronounce God's Son's name, but not God's name. hmm...

Also, the other reason is because of the long-standing belief or tradition of the Jews apparently on the misapplication of this law:
“You must not take up the name of Jehovah your God in a worthless way, for Jehovah will not leave the one unpunished who takes up his name in a worthless way." taken from Exodus 20:7.
This law commanded that you not disrespect the name of Jehovah, but it did NOT say that you shouldn't use it.
Isaiah 12:4 says "And in that day you will certainly say: “Give thanks to Jehovah, you people! Call upon his name. Make known among the peoples his dealings. Make mention that his name is put on high."

God is not a name, neither is Lord or Eternal. Those are titles.
His personal name is Jehovah:
Psalms 83:18 "That people may know that you, whose NAME is Jehovah, you alone are the Most High over all the earth."
Isaiah 42:8 says "“I am Jehovah. That is my NAME; and to no one else shall I give my own glory, neither my praise to graven images."

What did Jesus do while he was on earth?
He taught us to pray:
Matthew 6:9 " You must pray then, this way:Our Father in the heavens, let your NAME be sanctified (made holy)."
He prayed to his Father: "And I have made your name known to them and will make it known, in order that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in union with them.” -John 17:26
John 17: 6 says "I have made YOUR NAME manifest to the men you gave me out of the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have observed your word."

So obviosly one of the reasons that Jesus came down to earth was to glorify his Father's name, Jehovah, and make it known.

So what does the name Jehovah mean?
" "Jehovah" (Hebrew, YHWH), God's PERSONAL NAME, first occurs in Genesis 2:4. The divine name is a VERB (not a noun like most names), the causative form, the imperfect state, of the Hebrew verb, (ha-wah', "to become"). Therefore, the divine name means "He Causes to Become". This reveals Jehovah as the One who, with progressive action, causes himself to become the Fulfiller of promises, the One who ALWAYS brings his purposes to realization". (i.e. Judge, Savior, Protector, Creator, Hearer of Prayer, etc)
