Because these people are so arrogant and so pushy that they will eventually force the sane, sensible majority to stop sitting around on their backsides and tolerating these extremists and actually DO something about them!
Furthermore, by sticking to the "truth" of religion they show it in all its glorious absurdity and speed its long overdue demise.

No. Whenever fundamentalism infests any theology, it immediately aborts the inherent love, kindness, compassion and understanding of others which most religions talk about, but fail to demonstrate. Throughout history, fundamentalist extremists have caused more hell on earth through wars that are fed by hatred, fear, distrust, intolerance, bigotry and the desire to conquer those who do not think, act, or believe exactly as they do. Fundamentalist extremists are responsible for most of the strife that is going on in the world today. If the world is to be saved, then it has to be saved from fundamentalists who promote hatred and intolerance over kindness and compassion.

Based on the Crusades, Islamic extremists, etc., its track record isn't very good. It's got a shot at ending the world, but most fundamentalist Christians have decided that God's already doing that.
