Aji-no-moto is the Japanese name for MSG, so my guess is that this version is used in Japanese food.

Aji-no-moto (Monosodium Glutamate)
What is the secret behind the great taste of yudofu, or bean curd boiled with kelp?

In 1908, Professor Kikunae Ikeda unravelled his mystery when he identified glutamic acid as the source of this delectable taste.

The next year, his discovery was introduced to the market as the seasoning Aji-no-moto, or monosodium glutamate.

Today, Ajinomoto employs a special fermentation method to produce Aji-no-moto from sugar cane.
