It really depends on the person and your relationship with them! People can say anything but you are the best judge of their sincerity. There is a good article in the August Reader Digest about how to tell if people are telling you the truth. I look for eye contact and their facial expression. If they have been honest with you in the past and you have learn to trust them, accept their compliment. If you question there motives, still thank them for the compliment. Just accept it like they meant it but then appreciate those people that appreciate you. Most of us don't give and receive compliment as we should. It something one should do in sincerity and receive with grace.
