I have a 4 year old cat who sheds alot. More than my others, we have tried brushing her, and everytime we get enough fur to make a sweater... She is a bit over wieght, so i was wondering if it had anything to do with her health.

One can't be entirely sure if her shedding has to do with her health. I do suggest that you take your cat to the vet just to rule it out. I've owned cats throughout my entire adult life, perhaps this information may be useful.

Cats can shed for a variety of reasons. If a cat is stressed out, they will shed (my cats do every time I take them to the vet -- all over the exam table!). Is anything different at home that may be causing stress; cats are creatures of habit and if there are changes in their environment, they may shed.

Furthermore, do you keep your environment at a constant temperature? I recently moved and my cats are now exposed to a warmer climate -- this has caused them both to shed a lot more than usual. Cats will shed their fur in warmer weather in an effort to stay cool. My cats were accustomed to an apt where the temp was constant year-round, so they had no need to develop a thicker coat in winter, but now they have to shed some fur to stay cooler -- it's perfectly normal.

According to Cat Newsletter, hair shedding is considered a sign of health in the cat, because sick cats do not shed. Outdoor cats shed in the spring and fall, when the days start to lengthen and sun spends more time out.

Cat Newsletter makes several recommendations to manage cat shedding. One way to reduce cat’s shedding is to keep your cat healthy and feed her a quality cat food. You should feed your cat with nutritionally complete and balanced cat food that has all the nutrients cat requires for healthy skin and hair coat.

There are also some products on the market that can be applied to your cat’s hair coat to reduce daily shedding. There are vitamins derived from fish oils, available at pet shops and from veterinarians, which can also help. They provide omega-3 fatty acids that strengthen the coat. Also available are topical sprays, which alter and reduce the shedding cycle.

If the heavy shedding is consistent throughout the year, the cats may have food sensitivity or a dust allergy. In extreme cases of shedding, when your cat is actually sick from excessive hair balls, some veterinarians recommend shaving the cat three to four times a year. But in both cases you should consult with your veterinarian to determine the cause of such shedding.

I hope this information is helpful. Good luck with your cat.

Give your cat a bath to get all the excess hair off of her. Then just brush her at least twice a day...

Some cats require brushing its coat up to 4 times a week....
But that's the maximum limit ever set to a cat...so see how often do you do it...

change the diet. what food does she eat, is it quality food, if not then change the food to quality food, I suggest natural choice complete care indoor formula dry food. maybe call your vet's office and see if they have any ideas, maybe a trip to the vet wouldn't be a bad idea to make sure there isn't anything medically going on to make her shed a lot.

It really just depends on the type of cat and its genetics. It might just be prone to shedding if he is otherwise healthy.
