I also like "The Book of God" by J. Walter Wangerin

It is subtitled, "The Bible as a Novel" and rewrites the bible in the form of a historical novel, with less flowery wording and a very entertaining read!

The Story of Christianity: Volume 1: Volume One: The Early Church to the Reformation (Story of Christianity) by Justo L. Gonzalez is one of the standard texts used today at the college level. It replaces and older work by LaTourette and covers up to 1500.
The amazon.com link for it is: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060633158/sr=1-1/qid=1154363504/ref=sr_1_1/103-6392727-3116639?ie=UTF8&s=books
Christianity for Dummies is also well written and fairly cheap as well though it places more emphasis on Christian doctrine and its development than a detailed accounting of separate events.
The above recommendation for Bertrand Russell may prove useful if read in conjunction with other material but keep in mind his philosophic bias against spiritual events.

It's a long book, but the specific section relating to early christianity in Bertrand Russel's "History of Western Philosophy" is unrivalled for depth, clarity, ease of reading and entertainment.

I am afraid you have come to the wrong area for that question it would be more appropriate and likely to yield better answers if asked in History.
