No. He drove around in his popemobil, telling poor women all over South America not to use birth control. The Vatican is RICH yet there're Billions of suffering people on this earth. If there were a god, he/she/it would send John Paul II directly to hell.

Seeing as he was the only Pope to say that Evolution was real science and should be beleived (even though he caught a LOT of crap from his followers for that), Ill give you that much..... However, Id also point out that the Pope is the leader of the richest country on earth - the Vatican. When Italy was hit by an earthquake in the late 80's (1989 I think), JPII visited the area (near the Vatican) and blessed people and walked away - then called on the rest of the world to give monetary aide... So he was kinda a cheap-*** too....

he did alot of commendable things
including epitomizing Christian forgiveness and virtues up to the end
he probably was my favorite modern pope, but no way would i would put him above Peter or James and the foundations of heaven are marked with the names of the 12 apostles (with probbaly Paul in place of Judas) so greatest as far as foundational is the apostes.. could he be the greatest pope in another way...perhaps? I have to abstain form voting.. I think he had great strengths and some weaknesses
he held to Jesus as fully God and fully man
he seemed to have good priotrities
over elevated Mary as a mary maximalist, risking Mary becomeing a Jesus substitute for many people, He called on Mary when he was shot, not a good thing. He forgave the one who shot him, a very good thing.
he had a weak view of creation, abandoning much of Genesis toward a more theistic evolutionary long age view, undermining the values he wanted to support
he had a weak view of the sovereignty of God, at one point saying nuclear weapons threaten the sovereinty of God... not even close
he held on to many stunning truths of christianity, but let go a few he shoulda held onto more tightly
overall, I liked him

I agree with one of the answers --popular? yes
Greatest? no
Compared to other Popes like Pope Leo Xlll, Pope Pius X and Pope Pius Xll, who all exercised authority over matters, that is matters that caused confusion among faithful Catholics, like getting Cardinals and Bishops in order so they will not promote heresies such as teaching sodomy.
Another one is not doing anything to Cardinal Bernard Law from Boston. He was just appointed to an office job at the Vatican.
Instead we are left with more confusion.
One thing I liked that he did establish---I liked the fact that he investigated the matter of the Traditional Mass, he found out that it was not illegal for priests to celebrate it, and gave his blessing to form the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter.
Look into the pontificates of the three Popes mentioned above and compare them with JPll. You will see.

I really liked him an was impressed with his spiritual leadership. It is a tall order to say he was the best pope ever, but I think he is definitely the best modern pope, say in the past 200 years.

solid question. specific, John Paul the 2nd continues to be seen large. he is going to be a saint! i do no longer think of he became very boastful. that's merely my opinion. he's a pope to be remembered. whether he became Catholic, he visited alot of categories of church homes and those with different religions, inclusive of Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, and he became a Tibetan Buddhist! advantageous, he would have been in touch in some abuse scandels, yet he did say sorry truly, and as I say, the Christian and/ or Catholic way is to forgive and to settle for human beings. He expressed comprehend to others, inclusive of a Soviet chief, and while he became just about killed, he forgave the individuals. i think, with all my heart, that the Catholics who brought about havoc are sorry for what they did. Being unfavorable in the direction of the church would desire to no longer help. this is going to easily reason greater resentment to a pair people who're harmless and had no longer something to do with it. human beings make errors! think of on the subject of the apostle, Paul, working example. did no longer he attempt to kill the Christians? Later, although, he repented and became into the easy of the Lord. the main considered necessary ingredient to narrate on is, Christians and Catholics the two love and comprehend God.

Possibly. Certainly the best in my lifetime, so far anyway.
A case could be made for Pius XII too -- he led the Church through the incredibly tumultuous times of World War II.
And don't believe the horse-s**t that he was a Nazi collaborator who didn't do anything to help Jews.
It's absolute trash, and it's not true -- Pius XII and the Catholic Church saved more Jews from the Holocaust than anybody else out there. He was even hiding them inside the Vatican itself. Hitler hated him for it.
