It's a nice thought. To bad it would never work. Simply because Lawyers and the government would poke so many holes in it that it would be rendered worthless. We'd get two word essays simply saying WE WORK and so on. But hey at least your giving it thought. No problem has ever been solved without someone first giving thought. Keep up the fight and keep that mind working who knows maybe someday you might be the person who actually does solve this mess.

Most legal residents don't do anything for the US, heck, I'm not even doing anything right now. Why should illegal residents pledge to do anything? That essay idea would be the most corrupt idea ever. Who would be the esteemed reviewers of these essays and how much money would it take pay them off? I'm sure they would have a price. What happens if there is a hard worker out there with no formal education? I guess he's screwed. That's not what the American dream is about. I say we should just open up the borders and have only one guage to determine how well they do, and it's how they contribute to the workforce. If they can get a job and their employer is impressed, then let them stay. I noticed below that military service is a good route, and it is. If any man or woman would make those sacrifices and do that, they are more than welcome in my country.
I say we should move all the lackeys to Mexico, or Canada. Hippies, out. Drug addicts, out. Hard workers, regardless of nationality, in. Unless if your great great great grandpa kicked General Custer in the balls, we were ALL immigrants here at one point and believe it or not, we were all known for causing a stir. The mafia? Oh yeah, they were mostly newly arrived Italian immigrants. Don't even get me started about the Irish. Our ancestors worked crappy jobs for pennies and life was really really hard. They lived in slums and had to work themselves silly to get out of them. If you live in a suburb today, it's probably because one of your ancestors busted their balls to make life better for their family. We ALL spoke different languages when we came here (and some still do), but I guess we all forgot that.

Forget getting the essay in Englsih ...most or at least many, can't even write in their native tongues (like Spanish!) I volanteered as a Literacy tutor for several years and taught mostly immigrant folks. The most illiterate I experienced were from Mexico. They were so clueless about their own language and spelling, it was nearly impossible to teach them, as they had no basis in understanding about tenses, verbs etc.
This is one of the many reasons we can't affford to just let any old body in this country. It will cost us a fortune in many ways, to educate, cultivate and frankly civilize many of these people. It's not that they can't learn but many won't learn as they are at an age where all they want/understand to do is work and make babies. You'll notice that the highly educated people are not beating down the doors to become USA citizens.
The other flaw in your thought (I do like your approach tho) is that our government doesn't have it together enough (or is corrupted to the degree that it simply won't do the job) to enforce whatever agreements may be made with society in general or immigrants.
We are in a world of hurt on this immigration thang.
Be interesting to see what the outcome of this insanity will be and weather it will take us down or make us stronger. I fear it will be the former.

Would the essays have to be in English...?
Seriously, If they are in this country illegally but want a fast path to citizenship offer them the chance to serve this country in the military. One 4 year stint will give you a steady paycheck, excellent job training, and automatic citizenship.
Offer a similar deal through work programs to those who are physically unsuited for military service.
If you are not willing to work for this country in exchange for citizenship, goodbye...
