It is a great ride to travel this way. As to which boat...a cruise ship leaves Ft Lauder dale every day to many destinations in the Caribbean... There are personal yachts you could work your way on as crew... There are smaller freight boats that take some passengers.
. It depends on how you wish to travel.

A good thing to do is phone or visit local marinas in the city you wish to depart from. The dock master will know of all boats leaving his/her docks and where they are going. It would even help you to go to the marina nearest to where you live, the boating community is very tight and share information with each other.

If its something that you would like, take a cruise from Miami to any Caribbean island. If not, then I guess that you would need to find a charter boat from FL to the islands.
