i had a mourning dove that i found wounded one day. he had a leg injury and a wound on his head. he soon recovered remarkably fast and i released him into my back yard a week ago. finally he returned into my back yard today and made a nest on one of the trees. my worry is that i live in NJ and i sure that the the mourning doves here migrate and such so im not sure if he can migrate, being tame once and all. i planned to take him into the house fer the winter and release him again next spring. is this a good idea or is it best to let him attempt to migrate and most likely die =[?
SERIOUS ANSWERS here people . i need to know opinons of people who had such experience.

They are year-round residents in your area. Only the doves up in Canada migrate to the lower 48 for the winter. Your bird should do fine where it is now.

Mourning doves are captivating and have a good looking coo, yet they're as dumb as timber. Crows, grotesque as they're, are the best chook i've got ever run into. exterior of a puppy save, that's. Pigeons around here have tattoos and piercings; like the sewer rats, yet with wings.

If the dove has become VERY attached to you then he might not be able to go back to living on his own.

You might be able to get a wild life permit or license so it porves that you legally own or have rights to care for him.

But if you want some better advice ask a vet or wild life shelter on what to do about the dove.

But chances are you can possibly continue to care for him.

Ive seen them year round here in upstate new york. According to my bird guide, they are a non migrator, just moving around to find food.

Why don't you find out from somebody who knows birds (I think they are called ornithologists)?

Out here in CA the mourning doves stay year-round.

how imprinted to you is he?
i raised one and he was very imprinted to me and it practically took an act of GOD to get a permit from USF&W!!
it is illegal to have them without a permit. if he seems to be doing fine, which it sounds he is if he's made a nest, then you should let him be. it sounds like he's making it on his own finding food and surviving on his own!!
the males have more blue on their head where the females do not.
i hope this helps?!?!
