It's called being egotistical and that's generally normal for children under 5 years or so. It's also generally normal for alot of men. The medical term was noted in a post above there is a general narcissitic disorder and that generally goes beyond what you see with a five year old or many of those egotistical adults. At it's worst, a person cannot function in life if the condition is very bad.

Narcissism is love of self and egocentricity is seeing onesself as the center of the universe, so the latter is probably more correct. See the definitions below:
nar·cis·sism NOUN:
Excessive love or admiration of oneself. See Synonyms at conceit.
A psychological condition characterized by self-preoccupation, lack of empathy, and unconscious deficits in self-esteem.
Erotic pleasure derived from contemplation or admiration of one's own body or self, especially as a fixation on or a regression to an infantile stage of development.
The attribute of the human psyche charactized by admiration of oneself but within normal limits.
e·go·cen·tric ADJECTIVE:
Holding the view that the ego is the center, object, and norm of all experience.
Confined in attitude or interest to one's own needs or affairs.
Caring only about oneself; selfish.
Philosophy
Viewed or perceived from one's own mind as a center.
Taking one's own self as the starting point in a philosophical system.

Being "egocentric" might be a mental condition, but it's not a mental illness. Rather, it's a lack of development of one's elementary social skills such as empathy.

My son is scizophrenic, but there are all types. He is very self centered and lazy.also very irresponsible. I am told it's normal from his illness. I just don't understand it all yet,but it is mental, possibly genetic.
