I think "this generation" refers to the generation alive at the end of days. No one knows when He will come again as a thief in the night. Maybe He used those words so everyone would think theirs is the end generation and not put off making the decision to follow Him or not.

I think this question is based on Matthew 24. If so, you have taken several different things and lumped them together. Don't feel bad - most people do. It begins with a description of the destruction of Jerusalem (actually beginning in Matthew 23:36; note the bracketing "this generation"), and only later turns to the other issue of His return.
When Jesus spoke of "this generation," He spoke of those who were standing there at that time. Certain things would come on those who were alive at that time, including the coming of His kingdom (Mark 9:1).
Peter said that those who were there on Pentecost were in the "last days" (Acts 2:17). The Mosaic dispensation was over; the Christian dispensation had begun. There would not be another age beyond that.
That's got nothing to do with 'the end times.' Jesus said that there would be signs of the destruction of Jerusalem (Matthew 24:32-33), but there would be no signs of His return (Matthew 24:36-39).

Most scholars accept that the reign of the Romans under Nero was what he was referring to when speaking of those times. There are other scriptures which refer to it as well, as in the prophecies of Daniel (the dream of the statue representing the kingdoms coming until the time of Nero, as well, which can be mathematically corroborated). Also, though, are scriptures and prophecies which refer to the second coming of Christ. Most people who read these combine them all to mean one tribulation period, when there was more than one meant.

Most scholars believe that this refers to when Isreal regained their independence On May 15,1948 and the generation that sees this shall not pass before all of the things in the Bible are fulfilled. So this is the generation

This generation means the generation under grace, versus the generation that was under the Mosaic law. He did not lie.
