At this time in art, it was important for the artist to try to make themselves known in the growing art world. They had a hard time doing it so there were little things that they did in order to include themselves in the pieces that they were commissioned to do. Las Meninas shows a perfect example of the artist adding a self portrait right into the composition, without making it too obvious. The whole composition is based upon the viewer, and the viewer is supposed to be the King and Queen, which are seen in a mirror on the back wall. You are looking upon your little princess as she gets her portrait painted.
