i would give it a 6. Agree with the criticisms from the person who gave you the 3. The brush strokes could be more rhythmitic. One part on the face does look flate from the rest, i guess it's because of the light contrast he is trying to show. The face does not necessary has to be perfect proportional in my opinion, because it shows the person's characteristics. I like the cigarret added on the painting because it gives the person's uniqueness. I also really like the light effects and the choice of color. I think it could be one of those portraits of characters from classical literature books.

I'd give it a 3. I like the attention your mate is trying to pay to the light source and contrast, however:

- The stroke is poor in quality. Sometimes it's smooth, sometimes is rough it has no personality, no control. It feels like he struggles sometimes with the brush.
- The image is out of proportion (look at it in front of a mirror, you will see) specially the nose.
- Parts of the face have volume parts look flat as a pancake.
- He obviously didn't know what to do with the background.

Well, I recognize the assymetry and muckiness to be style - is this one like many others? Can the guy paint a face that looks realistic? If the answer to both is yes, then it's a decent painting :)

I like the mood and subject matter, though the face needs some work because it is not properly done ( it is very asymetrical) also some of the shadow especcially in the right lower corner is not rendered properly and it distracts from the painting.
good work though
good luck

It wouldn't be a subject I would purchase, but the technique is beautiful. I'd purchase a painting of someone without a cigarette in their mouth done by this artist. (-: 10!

The painting is quite good, but perhaps composition needs some adjustment.

bugs, i hate bugs, ineffective bugs specifically, for some reason i'm far extra fearful of a ineffective computer virus than a stay one that should pass slowly in the direction of and chew me, yet oh properly, basically an irrational concern i picked up from my mom.

I'd say that it's pretty good. Your friend must be an artist experienced enough to develop his own style.

Painting is ok, the subject is a mess
