Caravaggio, he was a true genius. Painted directly onto the canvas without cartoons or sketching to produce works of the most outstanding detail and beauty.

naturally, as everyone else noticed, far too many to choose from. I have as of lately had a particular jones for Manet and Courbet. But to define them as the greatest painters, can't quite do that. Both are inconsistent and expiremental. I think your choices of Bacon and Turner are very lovely. Gaugin and Dali however are not at the absolute top of my faves list. Lucien Freud is doing some very nice stuff right now and is in my opinion rightfully on the top of a lot of people's contemporary list.

One of the most innovative artist's of modern times is David Vaughan.
He was the father of the actress Sadie Frost, and unfortunately died two years ago.
He was the guy who painted John Lennon's psychedelic Rolls Royce, and Paul McCartney's piano (seen in Photos and film footage).
His black and white pencil drawing of David Beckham on the cross is going to be a classic eventually, so is all his other works.
As he was a friend of mine, he is going to be sadly missed.
