Regarding the request of information from the local authorities, many agencies will only release that information to the person in question. The only information that would be released would be of items not currently under investigation, and in many cases only a portion of the information may be released. (to protect the victims)
In reference to the websites, they are pretty accurate however you would need the name used during that case, and possibly a time frame depending on the set up. If someone has several alias, or your not for sure when it happened; then it may be hard to find, and not all court systems participate.
It is the court dockets, and entries that are public record; not that persons actual criminal history.
Cases involving juveniles, unless adjudicated into adult court are not public record.
Keep in mind that by contacting these individual agencies, and courts you will not have an official criminal history, as too everything that the person has been arrested, charged and convicted of with disposition information from every state and every jurisdiction. This information is only available from NCIC and is not available to the public.

Yes. Criminal records are public record. Most counties have a website where you can search by name, the offender and his/her record. For instance, here in Cincinnati, Ohio, you can go to www.hamiltoncountyclerkofcourts.com and search people's criminal, municipal and traffic records.
Type in your counties name in a search engine followed by the words: clerk of court..They should have a website where you can look up people's records.
And to the ignorant person who answered this question first: It IS very likely here in America. You shouldn't answer to things you know nothing about.

You can go to the police station or courthouse in every town where the person has lived and make a formal request. The fee is usually a nominal $15 or something similar.
Your other option is to search the public records at the local courthouse.

not sure about the states but here in canada, you cant get info on a person anymore unless your running a daycare center, or something to do with children, the only way you can get info, is like say your a landlord and a tentent want s to move inn, you give him a request form from the cop shop to find out if he has a criminal record, he has to request it, and it cost 25.00, weve done it here, we had a bording house, we have children and we tryed to get info on boarders and they wont do it, which i find really stupid, cause you never know if the person my be a sex affender from the past .and they wont let you know. kitchener ontario, canada

If you want to just look at a record, its public record, if you want a copy you have to pay for it as the courts do charge for the clerks to type it up. You don't have to pay to look.
