Serious means lots of things. The most serious would be those leading to loss of life or life threatening conditions. A serious adverse health consequence of smoking is cancer or emphysema. A serious adverse health consequence of obesity might be diabetes, hypertension, heart disease. Whatever the cause, the consequence is usually life threatening or impairing.
